He has already made between $75,000-$145,000 this year and doesn't know if he can afford to train for London 2012. Makes almost $2,000/month from USA swimming and claims that hardly covers his monthly training expenses.

Having previously made six figures from a contract with Nike. Is this a case of being paid less to do the same job, rather than, not being able to afford to train?

Unfortunately I am unsure of exactly how much it does cost to train for the Olympics, especially for someone like Lezak. I'm guessing monthly training expenses include a nutritionist, training gear, renting pool time, swim coaches, strength coaches, etc. This does not count rent or mortgage payments, credit card bills, car payments, car insurance, food, electricity, and any other miscellaneous expenses. The more you break it down, the more I would understand how it can become very costly to train for such an event.
